The 1950's was a time of medical triumph. In 1950 alone, the first human aorta transplant was conducted, Hepatitis A was discovered, and penicillin was first synthesized. Many other antibiotics were also discovered in the 1950's. These drugs are still used today. Furthermore, Dr. Jonas Salk discovered a cure for Polio in 1953. This happened just a year after the Polio epidemic's all time high. Soon after, the first open heart surgery was conducted, as well as the first kidney transplant and dialysis. In the later 1950's, the American Cancer Society linked lung cancer to smoking, ultrasound was used, the problem of pollution was realized, and a panacea vaccine for diphtheria, polio, and whooping cough was invented.
