The Arms Race, mainly between the United States and Russia, was an important part of the Cold War. Both countries fiercely competed to build up their weapon supplies and strengthen their country. This included missiles, tanks, and nuclear weapons. The US produced and tested the Hydrogen Bomb, 2500 times more powerful than the atomic bomb, in 1952. The next year, Russia made an H-Bomb of their own. A theory called Mutually Assured Destruction was developed, saying that if one country attacked, the other would retaliate and eventually both countries would be destroyed. In fact, the two countries had enough weapons by 1961 to destroy the entire world. The Arms Race could have resulted in nuclear war. Fortunately, it did not and tensions slowly disappeared.
